Photoshop Cookbook

Archived course

This course comprises five half-day sessions.

Summary

This course provides students with a series of “recipes” for common tasks used to improve digital photographs. Rather than simply learning how various Photoshop tools work, you’ll learn how to use the most essential ones in the context of how they can help to improve your images.

Although we will be using Photoshop, the techniques used can be easily transferred to other image editing software packages such as Photoshop Elements and PaintShop Pro.

Basic computer skills are a prerequisite for this course.

Please read the course notes for important additional information.

Course notes

You’ll be learning techniques that will help you make significant improvements to your digital photographs. Many Photoshop courses introduce you to the various tools available in the software, but not necessarily to how they are used in practice to deliver desired results.

The approach in this course is to use a series of well-defined tasks to demonstrate corrective techniques and then let you practice them to learn how to use the tools to achieve specific goals. Tasks will include:

  • Correcting colour casts
  • Converting colour images to black and white
  • Replacing a boring sky with a more interesting one
  • Cropping pictures to improve composition
  • Straightening images to fix wonky horizons
  • Perspective correction
  • Removing blemishes
  • Removing unwanted objects
  • Resizing images
  • … and many more

Equipment to bring

Students may choose to bring a selection of their own images to the course (on a memory stick or similar) to practice the techniques discussed. This is not required, however, as sample images will be provided.
